    Just because your odometer can reach 120 mph doesn't mean it is safe or legal for you to test it out. But here are 16 places in the United States where it is legal to drive fast, provided it is safe to do so.

    1. Texas – State Highway 130

    This 41-mile stretch of road is the fastest place you can drive legally in America. While driving 85 mph may not be great for fuel efficiency, the toll road alternative to I-35 cuts the commute between Austin and San Antonio in half.

    2. Montana – Interstate Highways Statewide

    The speed limit is 75 mph for now, but the state is looking to follow in Texas' footsteps and pass legislation for 85 mph speed limits. It is undecided, however, if the new speed would be legal only during daylight hours.

    3. Louisiana – Interstate 49

    The 75 mph speed limit is only legal throughout the 200-mile stretch between Saint Landry and Caddo Parish. This is the only area within the state proven to be safe enough for such a high speed.

    4. Wyoming – Interstate 25

    About 270 miles of the rural interstate saw an increase in speed during the summer of 2014. With an 80 mph speed limit, in the words of George Strait, you can still make Cheyenne.

    This stretch of road takes you about 330 miles across the state. At 70 mph, this is one of the fastest roads in the Sooner State, and it will take you less than five hours to get from one side to the other.

    6. Utah – Interstate 80

    From the Nevada state line to mile marker 99, just outside of Salt Lake City, the posted speed limit along this stretch of road is 80 mph. On your way to the state's capital, you will cross over the Bonneville Salt Flats and the Great Salt Lake Desert.

    From Old Town to Houlton, you can legally get away with driving 75 mph. When the speed limit was set in 2011, it was the first time since the 1970s that a road east of the Mississippi River established a 75 mph speed limit.

    8. New Mexico – Interstate 10

    There were no numeric speed limits in New Mexico until the 1950s. These days, the posted speed limit from the New Mexico – Texas state line to Las Cruces is 75 mph.

    Since the 1980s, the speed limit along these interstates has increased 25 mph. While it may now be at 80 mph, please note that the speed limit in urban areas (yes, there are a few urban areas in Idaho) along these routes decreases to 65 mph.

    10. North Carolina – Interstate 77

    Starting in Statesville and heading north, the interstate opens up to 70 mph. The speed slows down as you approach the Virginia state line and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

    After your fun in Las Vegas is over, you can make your way out of the city pretty quick by heading northeast to I-15. Once you're out of the city limits, it is smooth sailing at 75 mph until the Arizona state line.

    12. Pennsylvania – The Pennsylvania Turnpike

    When it first opened in October 1940, there was no speed limit on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Today, drivers can travel up to 70 mph on the east-west road that connects Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

    13. Colorado – Interstate 70

    If you imagined ripping up the interstate through the Rocky Mountains, then think again. Because of the steep grades and curves, the posted speed limit is 65 mph.

    They can legally drive at 75 mph, but most drivers in South Dakota would rather stay under the speed limit. Ten years after the increase, state officials noticed that drivers operate at or significantly below the limit. And there's no specific reason as to why!

    Unlike their southern neighbors, drivers in North Dakota have a tendency to fly down The Old Red Trail, the roughly 350-mile stretch of east-west road that goes across the state. Drivers can reach up to 75 mph on the road until they hit the urban areas around Fargo and Bismarck.

    16. Ohio – The Ohio Turnpike

    Despite concerns over safety from the Ohio Motorists Association and the Ohio Trucking Association, the speed limit of the Ohio Turnpike was raised to 70 mph from 65 mph. The increase was made in the hopes of directing more traffic to the turnpike and increasing revenues.
