Tell Us About Yourself(ie): Ne-Yo

The singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actor takes our Q&A!

What's the wallpaper on your phone and/or computer?

The wallpaper on my phone and my computer is the stars. One of the [wallpapers] they give you with the phones — I'm kind of lazy like that, so I don't really ever customize the. Before this it used to be of my kids, but I just recently got a new phone because I dropped mine and it cracked the whole front, so now it's just the stars.

What is the last thing you searched for on Google?

Who directed the video "No More Drama" for Mary J. Blige. I was actually kickin' with J. Lo talking about some music that we're gonna put together, and we were talking about great directors. She said she really really liked that video and was wondering who directed it, so yeah, I looked it up!

What was your first online screen name?

I don't remember! It's been awhile and there's been multiple names — some better than others — but nah, I don't remember the first one.

When you walk into a bar, what do you typically order?

I typically order a vodka tonic with a splash of cranberry or vodka Red Bull. I'm kind of a vodka guy.

Who is the last person that called or texted you?

    My assistant.

What is your TV guilty pleasure?

Guilty pleasure implies that it's something that I feel guilty for watching... people tell me I should feel guilty for watching because I'm too old to watch it but I don't give a damn: I love everything on Cartoon Network from Adventure Time to The Adventures of Gumball, Teen Titans... all those shows that are for my kids, I like those! I like Family Guy and American Dad, too, but if I ever get the opportunity in the time bracket, I would definitely watch Adventure Time and all of those.

And what TV show should everyone be watching?

I'm a big fan of Empire and I'm gonna get the privilege to be a part of the Empire family: they're writing me into the script as a character — not as myself, which is kind of cool. I'm digging that. Also I'm doing a lot of the music for the second season, so that's special. Huge Scandal fan, and I have been since the beginning. Recently caught up on my Game of Thrones, really really excited about the next season of that.

What's the first CD you bought?

It was a group called The Pharcyde, The Bizarre Ride. I remember at my first job, which was McDonalds, I bought the CD with my first paycheck.

What music are you currently listening to?

I'm a little bit of everything type of dude. I love where R&B is going right now, I dig that. But I also dig the kind of funk movement that's happening right now. People are bringing a lot more of that funk element into their music, you know, with Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson — that's one that you never thought you would hear something like that on the radio again cause it just sounds so much like the Back Bay and what they were doing with music back then. I almost thought it would be too sophisticated but people really dig it and the penglium is swinging back toward actual music. The Weekend just put out a crazy single that has a funk-based line on it, so I like that funk is re-entering the realm.

What movie makes you laugh the most?

The first Anchorman! That movie was hilarious to me. The second one was okay, but it got really, really silly with the second one. The first one was more genuine. Also 40 Year Old Virgin — stuff like that.

What is the one food you cannot resist?

Oh god anything with red sauce and cheese. I am an Italian food fanatic. I really, really am. And it's bad because it's the one food I'm really not supposed to eat cause it's all pasta and cheese and stuff that'll fatten me up... but it's definitely my favorite food.

    What drives you absolutely crazy?

People that lie. People that make up stuff. I'm a firm believer in the power of honesty: blunt, painful honesty. Be brutally honest with me, don't sugar-coat anything for me. I don't care if you know it's gonna destroy me. I would rather be destroyed by the true than uplifted by a lie.

    What's your favorite emoji?

The little smirk, with the eyes low and the sideways smile. 😏 That and the one where it's the full teeth smile with the eyes closed, those are my two emoji children. 😁

    Pick one: Kittens or puppies?

    Kittens.

    New York or Los Angeles?

Oh, man. I can't decide! I do so much work in both cities, I've fallen in love with them both. My girlfriend and my mistress: New York and LA. I'm literally bicoastal: I live in Atlanta but spend a lot of time on the east coast and west cost evenly.

    Britney or Christina?

    Christina. Respectfully.

    Coffee or tea?

    Tea! Absolutely.

    Comedy or drama?

    Comedy.

    '80s or '90s?

Oh man! That's a good one. I'm gonna go with eighties, no disrespect to the nineties.

    Beyoncé or Rihanna?

Oh, come on! You can't ask ME that question!

And finally: tell us a secret.

A secret! Hmmm... Here's the difficulty in being an open book: I don't have any secrets! It's pretty much all in the open. I don't even really much of hide anything except my head, and that's not even hiding anything: I just prefer hats on my head!
