tiffanil 5 months agoThis isn’t really news worthy… I work with special needs and once a month, we go to the really rough areas downtown and hand out food to the homeless. Keep in mind, this is food we made by ourselves. We stand outside in the cold with no complaints, no media, no protection for ourselves. Still every time I say to myself “this is what life is about”.

Davine S. 5 months agoI hear ya, but when a celebrity does it and it gets reported, it has a trickle-down effect of making people more aware about volunteering opportunities. It’s like when I watched that Simpsons episode where Homer donates blood, and I went “Oh yeah, it’s about time for me to donate again”, so I did. Life gets busy, so reminders are good. Sure, some celebrity wannabes (like Heidi & Spencer) will do this kind of thing for attention, but I think NPH seems like a genuinely nice guy and he knows that raising awareness about volunteering is a good thing. There are some famous people (NPH being one of them) who do this pretty frequently; it’s a lot better than washing already-clean dishes for a cheap photo-op, that’s for sure.

Thanks, Robot On! Unrelated: I am SO CONFUSED about the new commenting system. (New to me, at least, because I wasn’t on Buzzfeed for about 5 months). I can’t figure out how to see replies, so I kinda feel like I’m talking to myself all the time. Glad one person saw me! :)

You’re free to disagree, but I just want to share my perspective: Maybe there’s a young teenager out there who never heard of a soup kitchen until now, who knows? You do volunteering already (and well done, for that), so you must have heard about it somewhere - but there are plenty of people for whom this kind of minor exposure is a good thing. A lot of people tend to think “Oh, helping the needy? Yeeeeeah, someone else will do it”… but when they see someone they recognise actually rolling up their sleeves - someone they admire and can think of as a friend - it changes their perception. Hand on heart, these pictures make ME think “Oh shit, I really should do stuff like that”. I saw an incredible movie recently and I felt so warm and positive afterwards, I bought food and coffee for 5 random homeless people on my way home. It might not seem like a big deal to someone else, but it represented a big leap of faith on my part because I tend to be quite shy. I was inspired, so I took that leap and I was glad I did. All I’m saying is that there is absolutely nothing to be lost by people getting this kind of incentive out there, while there is potentially a lot to gain. Celebrities - for better or worse - are role models for “regular” people. Sure, maybe 999 people would say “how nice of him” and continue on with their lives, but maybe ONE person will think “Hey! Y’know, that makes me want to pursue a commitment to volunteering in my town!”. And people still got fed that day, so even though it makes the celebrities look good (apart from Paul Ryan), I just can’t see it as being a bad thing. [Sorry this is so long. Whenever I try to edit something, it just gets longer.]
