9 Things That Moved With The Times Compared To Our Method Of Electing Politicians

Here is a list of nine things that have leapt forward with the times, compared to our system of electing politicians. WebRoots Democracy is campaigning for online voting in order to help drag our democracy into the 21st Century.

1. Cars.

Pictured at the top is the Daimler Mercedes of 1901.

2. Books.

It is estimated that Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1440.

3. Music players.

On the left is a picture from 1914 of a gramophone.

4. Personal Computers.

At the top is a photo of the IBM 5150 personal computer.

5. Mobile Phones.

On the left is the Motorola DynaTac 8000X from 1983.

6. Planes.

At the top is the Wright Brothers' 'Wright Flyer' of 1903.

7. Banking.

The British retail bank, National Provincial Bank (later NatWest) was established in 1833.

8. Messaging.

During World War 1, homing pigeons were used extensively to carry important messages.

9. 3D.

1952 to 1954 is often labelled as the 'golden era' of 3D film. At the bottom is a still from Michael Jackson's 2014 posthumous hologram performance at the Billboard Music Awards.

Voting.

At the top is the original ballot box used to re-elect Hugh Childers as an MP in 1872. Almost a century and a half later, we still use the same method of voting.
