How To Be A Cat Person While Actually Hating Cats
Cats were the most annoying animals for me, and as a dog person, I had never considered getting one. Until that moment.
My experience with dogs goes back to my early childhood as I grew up in a house with a German Shepherd and a Boxer. Even though this two had different temper, they did get along very well and I felt that these animals completed me. I never even considered allowing a cat to be near me. I didn't think of them as pets and I was probably the most committed "dog person". I though of myself as superior by owning dogs, and anyone who loved and owned cats would be lower and even disrespected sometimes. Cats seemed to me like silly and aloof animals. All they do is spend their time sleeping and playing with yarn balls.
Living in a small flat during my college years, I couldn't afford to take care of any canine friend, but I didn't want to have any other pets either. Even though I knew cats are easier to take care of, I just couldn't imagine having one in my life. My own mother will be horrified to read this, as she has a huge allergy to kitties since her youth. I can think of at least three close friends who will make fun of me for writing this. Do you care if you close friends are cat people? Did you think this could affect your personal life? What about your lover? Dating sites even let you filter choices based on pet preference. Do you think something so little could matter in your love life?

I was dating a cat lover who was too emotionally attached to these animals. I loved the hell out of that boy, but we would always start arguing when it came to the topic. It almost ended when he brought home a helpless and abandoned kitten, which he obviously had to rescue and shelter. He was paying more attention and affection to the cat and that annoyed me immensely.
One morning I woke up finding a dead mouse in the middle of the room and the cat was proudly sanding next to it. The kitten was staring at me, practically saying "Yeah. this one is for you".
We had a lot other situations and with time I started noticing other annoying cat habits , but I somehow got used to them. Sometimes I would even find funny and entertaining how the cat acts around us.
I'm not sure when my cat-hating phase ended, but I started thinking how being a cat person might change me. I started observing the way my boy acts around the cat. Dog people most times seek a pet who complements their personality, but cat people like cats because they are a better match of their personality.
Even though cats don't have any emotional benefit, they don't cause that much harm either. In fact, I read people are almost eight times as likely to be injured by their dog than their cat.
Eventually, I got used to living with this cat and I even feel emotionally attached to it. I started appreciating the animal for who it was by seeing how happy it can make my sweetheart by just acting foolish. Some time later, now things are a little out of control and we even celebrate the kitten's birthday and are thinking about adopting a second one. I'd recommend adopting an older cat though, as their personalities are already developed. It will be much easier to find a cat that will suit you and your home.
I still love dogs, but I now appreciate both animals and have found out that cats are amazing at picking up our emotions.
