Double-Vision At The 2014 Twins Day Festival || Twinsburg OH

The city of Twinsburg was named after identical twins Aaron and Moses Wilcox in 1819, after the twins donated land for the construction of a public square. Every year, since 1976, the city has hosted The Twins Day Festival where thousands of twins and multiples congregate to celebrate their uniqueness and similarities. Here are 10 photos of twin attendees and some interesting information about twins and multiples.

Sixties Soul

This year's theme was The Sixties and these little guys totally represented! There was a huge line to take photos with them, that by the time I took this photo they were so over it (I don't blame them, but they were such troopers!), and managed to still look adorable! In the music world, other groovin' twins include fraternal twins, Robin and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees, a hugely popular group in the 1960's and 1970's. Across the pond, this represented the Swinging Sixties.

Pretty in Paisley

These pretty ladies are nurses in the Veterans Affairs hospital in Cleveland OH. And, in keeping with the medical theme, a fun fact for you: twins are two offspring produced by the same pregnancy. Twins can either be monozygotic ("identical"), meaning that they develop from one zygote that splits and forms two embryos, or dizygotic ("fraternal"), meaning that they develop from two eggs, each fertilized by separate sperm cells. These ladies are not sure whether they are identical or fraternal, but they sure look identical to me!

RED ALERT: With these red tees, these twins had their own share of attention, plus they had these cute buttons: TWIN A and TWIN B. SCI-FI NOTE: Released in 1977, Star Wars became the epic space opera film that captured the imagination of a generation. Evidently, it continues to fascinate folks young and old.

This is me and my identical twin, @tawnybabe! She currently lives in OH (while I'm in NYC) and will be moving to Miami soon, so we felt that we had to go to Twins Day this year. It is difficult for twins to be parted, but imagine if you were Chung and Eng Bunker, the world's most famous conjoined (siamese) twins. Born in Siam (now Thailand), the Bunkers' condition and birthplace became the basis for the term "Siamese twins."

Baller Brothers

These sporty sibs happily posed for me and displayed their love for each other, showing the strong and unique bond that twins have. Other athletic twins include doubles players, Bob and Mike Bryan. The Bryan Brothers, as they are commonly referred to, are currently, the only doubles pairing in the Open Era to hold all four major titles at once, as well as the only team in history to hold all four majors and Olympic gold simultaneously.

The diverse crowd of twins include these lovely ladies wearing these eye-catching bell bottoms. In the mid-60's, this fashion became synonymous with the hippie counter-culture movement, and came to signify the sexual and intellectual revolution of the era.

1960 in Spaceflight

In their matching spacesuits, these twins represented the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union, which dominated the 1960's. In 1960 alone, the United States had 29 orbital launches. The following year, on April 12, 1961, the Soviet Union sends Yuri Gagarin, the astronaut that would forever be known as the first man in space.

Bowtie Brothers

Also spotted, bow-tie wearing brothers! Check out the unique handicraft wooden bowties made by two twin brothers from Siberia. Did you know that the bowtie originated among Croatian soldiers during the Prussian wars of the 17th century. The style of wearing scarfs tied around the collar, was soon adopted (under the name cravat, derived from the French for "Croat") by the French upper class, eventually becoming a fashion staple.
