7 Things You Need To Know About UT Austin Orientation

New Student Services at the University of Texas at Austin has created a list of 7 things to know about UT Orientation to help the Class of 2018 prepare for their summer orientation session and get in the Longhorn State of Mind!

1. Pre-Orientation Modules are live!

All Class of 2018 students who are registered for UT Orientation must complete a series of pre-orientation modules. Each module features a short video that contains information essential to your transition to life as a Longhorn.

It will take about an hour to work through the modules, all of which are required — and all of which must be completed before you arrive at orientation.

Please note: If you do not complete all of the required modules, you will not be able to check-in at Orientation.

2. Yes, ALEKS is required for most #UT18 students.

If you are planning to take any math course this fall (except M302), you will need to complete the math assessment test BEFORE orientation. Information about math assessment is included in the pre-orientation modules.

3. If you come to a later session, yes you will still get classes!

Departments know that students attend orientation and register for classes throughout the summer. We cannot guarantee freshmen that they will get the perfect schedule just as we cannot guarantee that to seniors. At orientation you will work with your advisors to choose courses that will meet your degree requirements. You will also have the option to use the add/drop period in the first week of classes to make changes to your schedule if need be. Registration will work out, and we are here to help.

4. You do not need to pick out your class schedule before orientation.

One of the reasons we have orientation is for new students to meet with academic advisors in the college you are admitted to, where you will discuss degree plan requirements. Academic Advisors and OAs will help you choose courses that will meet requirements and your interests. Fall registration does require some flexibility so do not get your heart set on one schedule. We are here to help you through this process!

5. Don't overpack, but do know what to bring!

Orientation is a busy and exciting 3 days, so we advise that you pack light.

- Comfortable Clothes & Shoes. The UT Austin campus is large and during orientation you will definitely move about campus to get from place to place, so it is important be as comfortable as possible. Pack appropriate shoes and clothes for the summer.

- High School Transcript. If you have not already sent this in, bring your transcript with you to orientation so advisors can help guide you to an appropriate class schedule.

- Alarm Clock. Be sure and have your phone, watch or an alarm clock with you to set however many alarms you need to be at all orientation meetings and events on time.

- Toiletries. It is important that you bring basic toiletries such as soap, deodorant, grooming items, etc. as these items are not provided while at orientation.

- Towels, Washcloth and Shower Shoes. It is important that you bring a towel and shower shoes as these items are not provided while at orientation.

- No. 2 pencils. As many new students will be taking exams for ALEKS or a foreign language, the last thing you want to do is get to the test and not have pencils on you.

- Government-issued Photo ID. A driver license, passport, state issued ID with a photo on it is required for check-in at orientation and for getting your student ID (high school IDs are not acceptable.

- Laptop or Tablet. In order to facilitate the experience around advising and registration, you are encouraged to bring your laptop or tablet to orientation. This will help you look up courses and will expedite the process of registering for classes on the 3rd day.

7. At Orientation, I Get To Room With My Best Friend From High School, Right?

Part of the orientation experience is Class of 2018 students will be housed by other students in the same college. You will get to meet with other students who you will be taking classes with and begin to build new connections with your classmates.

It's okay, your best friend will also be able to meet new students in their college and begin making connections as well! :)

FYI: Housing at orientation is different than who you room with this fall.
