Star Wars Is So Very British!

A long time ago, in a country across the Atlantic, production for a science fiction movie about a galaxy far, far away began. Today it’s one of the biggest movie franchises, hailed for its groundbreaking special effects and technology.

Each Star Wars film was partially filmed in the UK!

The Jedi Lightsaber--one of the most iconic weapons in film history-- is the result of UK innovation and creativity! Award-winning British special effects director John Stears created the energy sword used by both the Jedi order and the Sith.

Stears, along with British set designer John Barry and a UK engineering firm, created a full-scale model of the X-Wing and Y-Wing fighter ships from the original at a cost of £27,000 (that’s £178,000 in today’s money).

There are plenty of British accents in both the original trilogy and the prequels. The characters of Darth Vader (David Prowse), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), C3PO (Anthony Daniels) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Sir Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor) are just a few fan-favourites played by British actors.

Sir Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Trilogy, is the only Star Wars actor to be nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the films.

The upcoming Episode VII will also include some well-known faces, as well as some new ones from the UK, including Andy Serkis, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley.
