      The video is cute.  However… I have some thoughts about this - with all due respect. From a Service Dog advocate and Dog Trainer. First, I don’t think this should be called “the healing power of pets.” Service Dogs are NOT pets. They are specially trained to help a person with a disability. They’re considered medical equipment and have the right to accompany their disabled handler anywhere they go.  Second, the video provides confusing information about Seizure Alert/Response Dogs. The trainer claims that the dogs respond to body odor - however, that is only one of two theories regarding what the dogs alert to. (The other is minor changes in motor function.) And they’re just that, theories. Unlike diabetic alert dogs, which are trained to recognize the body odor of their handler when they have high or low blood sugar, seizure alert dogs are not trained on scent items - they either alert or they don’t. (Very few dogs do this.) The alert is NOT trained, it’s something the dog does. The response (like fetching Mom or laying with the boy) is the trained behavior. Third, the way the family uses Service Dog on one side of the vest and Therapy Dog on the other side is confusing. Service Dogs and Therapy Dogs are not the same. Service Dogs are individually trained to do specific tasks that help a specific person with their disability. They have specific protection under the law. (The law that covers them in the US is the Americans with Disabilities Act.) Therapy Dogs are the pets of their handlers, trained in basic obedience and selected for outgoing temperaments, who visit with the elderly, children, or the sick to provide comfort and love (basically, to be petted). They have no public access unless they’re working in that location and they’re not trained to do any tasks for persons with disabilities. They also have no protection under the law.
