Completed in 2007 by Merkx + Girod Architecten, the Selexyz Dominicanen Bookstore in Maastricht in the Netherlands is an incredible church conversion that was originally consecrated in 1294.

With land being a premium in the country, local governments have opted to convert and restore rather than demolish these historic abandoned buildings.

The location has not been used as a church for over 200 years. While some may find this usage peculiar, there are actually a significant number of abandoned churches in the Netherlands, many of them hundreds of years old.

Isabel1206 11 months agoThere’s also a selexyz in my city, not in an old church but in a very old building nonetheless, absolutely the most beautiful and calm bookstore I’ve ever been to!

Lillithdv8 11 months agoI thinks it’s a great idea. Gothic churches are beautiful structures it’s a great way to preserve a 700 year old the building while doing something useful with the space.
