This LA-based Artist Hand Draws Your (Creepy) Likeness For $1

Jenny Webber friends you on Facebook, combs through your photos, and then picks the one she wants to completely disfigure.

Webber has been operating $1 Portraits for about four years. First, you like her Facebook page and post something like, "Draw me, Jenny!" After friending you, she draws your picture by hand, scans it into Photoshop, colors it, and posts it for your giggling pleasure.

An LA native, Webber is a teacher by day. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a BA in journalism, which turned out to be a wasted degree. She worked at a news station for a couple years before realizing that journalism wasn't her bag, and she's currently in a teaching credential program online through Cal State LA.

Webber says her drawings have been called "ugly," "clownish" and "grotesque," so if you're looking to have your portrait done Raphael-style, you'll have to look elsewhere. "This is a project for the thick skinned with a sense of humor," she says on her Facebook page.

Webber accepts payment through PayPal and Google Wallet and, since each image is hand-drawn, she asks that customers order only one portrait at a time (I didn't read that part and ordered 18 at once, and Jenny let me know that was a no-no. She still got them all done, though, in like a week. But seriously, don't do what I did).

She wanted to do a social experiment, drawing people from as many different states/countries/continents as possible. When she is done, she wants to create a map showing where all of her subjects are located. She's drawn people in more than 20 different countries so far, and as many states in the US, producing 1,500 in her four years working on the project.

In addition to drawing you and your friends, Webber will draw babies, cats and dogs. She is one of those super creative types, dabbling in fashion photography, producing head shots and is she also a graphic designer.

In her down time (what is she, a robot?) Webber looks forward to the Pasadena Lapidary Society's monthly field trips to hunt for rocks/gemstones/crystals, she gardens, sews, reads and tumbles rocks.
