5 Other Times Kim Kardashian Tried To Break The Internet

The past week has seen the internet abuzz about a series of risque photos published by PAPERMAG. The photos, accompanied by the three word mission statement to "Break the Internet" showcased dilettante businesswoman Kim Kardashian in a number of nude and semi-nude poses.

While much has been made of this photo shoot, you may not be aware that this is not the first time Kim Kardashian has been involved in a concerted effort to break the internet. Some of her previous capers may surprise you.

1. 2013 DDoS Attack

In March of 2013, a Distributed Denial-of-Service attack created such a spike of activity in European and North American networks that it threatened to grind the entire internet to a halt. While much reporting focused on the attack itself, little attention was given to the perpetrator, reality star and notorious hacker Kim Kardashian.

2. 2008 Submarine Cable Damage

In 2008, several submarine internet cables in the Mediterranean were cut, causing widespread disruption to internet services in Europe and the Middle East. Services were restored within days but the culprit, socialite and underwater vandal Kim Kardashian, was never charged.

3. The Death of Michael Jackson

On June 25, 2009, the world lost a pop legend as Michael Jackson passed away at the age of 50. The resulting flurry of internet activity caused news sites to fall like dominoes, and web traffic in general slowed to a crawl. While much focus was given to Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, for his role in the musician's death, model and potential murderer Kim Kardashian has largely escaped scrutiny for any part she may have played.

4. NSA Surveillance

In June 2013, the world was stunned by the revelations of National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden. The NSA leaks revealed pervasive spying by the intelligence organisation on the phone and internet communication of both its own citizens, and those of other nations. Internet users around the world were immediately disillusioned about their privacy on the internet, striking a heavy blow to the trust they placed in this vital, world-changing infrastructure. But who was the puppetmaster pulling all of the strings of the NSA's vast and intrusive surveillance program? None other than actress and spymaster, Kim Kardashian.

5. #NetNeutrality

Net neutrality is the principle that all web traffic should be treated equally, with equal bandwidth and charges for all data transmission, regardless of content. There have been recent concerns raised in the US around the preservation of net neutrality, with major cable providers such as Comcast and AT&T lobbying against it. Recently, Comcast even throttled the speed of Netflix traffic, in what many view as a highly anti-competitive move, and direct attack on the principle of net neutrality. Many believe that the architect of this cable company bullying behaviour was none other than fashion designer and Comcast technician, Kim Kardashian.
