    • Unfortunately, it is this new “8 & 4” advice that is garbage! It is entirely true that the number of serious arm and facial injuries increased dramatically when drivers’ airbags were invented, but the biggest cause is NOT holding the wheel at “10 & 2,” it is due to the inappropriate method of steering that most people were taught or later adopted through - dare I say it - laziness. It is crossing your arms over the wheel while turning it that (rather obviously) causes danger if the airbag fires and blasts your arms into your face! Proper (as in vastly safer) “pull-push” steering has been compulsory for passing the test in some countries for decades but here in the USA, where drivers’ ed and the driving test are regrettably very poor quality, sloppy “hand-over” (a.k.a. “rotational”) steering is allowed, and THAT is what causes the main part of the danger!

I’m kind of taken aback seeing how many people drive with two hands. I thought the majority drove with one..? I can’t imagine driving with two hands, it feels totally uncomfortable and wrong, like writing with both hands at the same time or something. Yeah, sometimes i’ll touch my left hand at the bottom of the wheel (drape fingertips over the inside) but always steering with right hand at 12’o’clock. I actually think two-handed steering driving is more dangerous. If you need to swerve or turn really quick, especially a big rotation, it’s quicker to just maneuver the wheel in a fluid motion. There’s really no quick way to ‘hand-over-hand’ the wheel (2-hand steering) in that situation, and it just ups the chance of slips and such. Just how i see it.

3&9 o’clock, racedrivers don’t use it by accident. By far the best position.

I didn’t hear anything about it increasing control? Pretty sure if the airbag has gone off you’ve already lost control in some form or fashion. What is so wrong with “Two hands on the wheel”? Do we really have to bring clocks into this??

Is this really new to anyone? I took driver’s ed over 10 years ago, and they were telling us back then to hold the wheel at 9 & 3…

My mother taught me 9 and 3 eight years ago. It’s also what I learned in driver’s ed in 2009. And while the video makes some good technical points, if I feel most comfortable driving at 9 and 3, that’s how I’m going to drive.  I’m highly entertained by many of these comments, though.

Of course at the rate the DMV changes *anything*, you’ll still need to keep your hands at 10 and 2 to pass a driving test. I’ve kept my hands at 8 and 4 for years, as it also keeps your arms from fatiguing on a road trip. :)
