We are a united front of students and student organizations at Syracuse University. Our goals are to educate and inform other students and the administration about the grievances and problems that students of various socio-economic class, disability, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexuality, and race experience on a day to day basis. The student body also recognizes that issues of privilege and discrimination are pervasive on campus, yet unrecognized by the SU administration. Ultimately, students with marginalized identities feel unsafe and unsupported at SU. The student body recognizes that these are not personal problems to be borne by the individual, but structural problems which the administration has a responsibility to address in order to ensure the the safest campus possible. We held the Diversity and Transparency Rally (DAT Rally) on November 3, and immediately after marched to Crouse-Hinds Hall, SU’s administrative building. We have committed to sitting in Crouse-Hinds Hall until Chancellor Syverud makes a public and written statement to the SU/ESF community committing to a plan of action that addresses each item listed in the grievances and demands document and agreeing to the deadlines the document has laid forth.

    After the closure of the Advocacy Center, the cutting of a merit based scholarship program, and the inability of students to reach out to their administration, a group of Syracuse University students named THE General Body have been sitting in at the administration building on their campus since Monday, November 3rd. They have been sleeping on brick floors in an effort to put pressure on the administration to improve student services, increase transparency, and honor diversity on campus. Negotiations have been ongoing, and as much as the students would like some fresh air, they are still waiting on a written agreement that their demands will be taken seriously and a solution will be reached. Here are their reasons for continuing to sit-in:
