As a kid from the desert I was astounded to see the giant squirrels they had in New England. They’re huge. Also I love the videos of squirrels figuring out those obstacle courses to get to the bird feeder.

Squirrels are not rats but are classified as rodents and they are also described as the ‘cleanest’ rodents. As for being ‘mean’ and ‘destructive’….that implies deliberate malice and is an absurd response. Squirrels gnaw on wires in attics mainly due to the fact that their teeth continue to grow throughout their life and they must grind them down by chewing. If they have nuts to chew, no problem. When they’re trapped or the weather prevents them from foraging they chew on whatever is at hand. We have bi-colored squirrels and black squirrels here in No. Va. and I feed them twice daily. They come when I call them and take the nuts from my hand. They’re sweet and shy and extremely fun to watch when they play. They are also extremely responsible parents and teach their young how to forage for nuts and green shoots. Terrific animals.
