House of Cards, Netflix’s latest creative venture, is about a bad-ass, power hungry rouge House Majority Whip staring Kevin Spacey and produced by David Fincher (who also directs the first two episodes). Everyone and their moms; have been telling me to watch House Of Cards…for real. On the outside, this show seems almost too perfect; it has too many appealing elements. It’s like I was being dared to not like it.

The time came when I finally watched the first two episodes. They were good. And how could they not be? Spacey brings it, and it shows. Fincher seems to be on his directing game, both episodes are tightly paced and make old rich guy problems seem interesting. That was about it though. It was just good, not great. Just enough excitement to get you feeling good. I left feeling like it was the Budweiser of TV, not great but I won’t complain. Whether the show was good or bad really isn’t important; the interesting thing is how the show was created; in essence, it is a test tube television show.

The Netflix version of House of Cards was created through extensive research. After analyzing their own data, Netflix gathered the most compelling stats in order to engineer a show just for you. Netflix found that their users like the work of David Fincher , films staring Kevin Spacey; and, most importantly, users also seem to get there watchin’ done in block sittings. Icing on the cake? The BBC version of House of Cards is also rather popular. Bingo-Bango-Bongo, we got ourselves the perfect new series.

I’m not complaining or talking down on the show; its obviously very successful. It’s odd this show has swooped down from on high and received crazy praise for being exactly what we have come to expect out of TV. This sort of thing has gone on forever House of Cards isn’t the first and its not going to be the last. It is just a crying shame that the same reasoning that goes into fast food and bland beer

(make it just good enough to keep them coming back) has spilled over onto my beloved TV screen.

Lets get real though, its just a show. If anything, it is awesome that this show is doing so well because it completely outside of the normal cable networks. Perhaps it means we will finally get shows that do not need to be approved by the select group of people who control the airwaves. Which is good, but the show could of been much better. Just sayin.’

Maybe I’m a little bias here, if we are talkin’ British television, I’m more of a Downton Abbey kind of guy. Cause if I am going to watch a show about rich people problems I want it to have some class.
