considering hundreds of thousands or millions of people are seeing the ads, that’s pennies per viewer. you may as well say “I can’t believe how many millions of dollars McDonald’s corporate spends on developing new sandwiches!” or “I can’t believe the government is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on healthcare and education!”

That sounds like a lot, until you realize that commercial ad buys are essentially what fund the paychecks of the cast and crew of TV shows and the employees of the networks and their affiliates. If companies suddenly stopped paying big bucks for commercial airtime, there would be less jobs in the television industry and a major drop in the quality of television programming. Plus, it’s all those commercials that drive consumers to spend money on products and services that further produce jobs and fuel the economy, not to mention the fact that they create jobs for the crew people that make commercials too. It’s an economic model that, as long as it’s done correctly and ethically, works well.
