STOP STOP STOP WITH THE RIDICULOUS OUTDATED JEWISH STEREOTYPES!! not all Jewish moms are controlling, force-feeding and obsessed with their children marrying doctors! most of these stereotypes were only ever slightly relevant and/or funny over 50 years ago when most US Jews were children of eastern European Jewish immigrants. this is the 2nd “Jewish mom” thing on buzzfeed in 2 days. it may not be overt racism but it’s an obnoxious trivialization of Jews and Judaism.
The fact that most American Jews think that this nonsense is the essence of Judaism is why we’re assimilating and disappearing at such alarming rates.

The very basic basics of keeping kosher are only eating animals that both have split hooves and chew their cud (cows, sheep, goats etc.), only fish that have both fins and scales, & only birds that are on a list in the Torah (but basically no birds of prey). Animals are slaughtered in a process called schita which is designed to minimize their pain as much as possible (Judaism cares a whole lot about preventing animal cruelty). We don’t mix meat and dairy products. We check our fruits & veggies to make sure there are no bugs in them and remove all blood from our meat because bugs & blood are also not kosher.
For more information google “kosher” or “kashrut” (the noun form of kosher) or check out

Of course it’s offensive. I think the general rule of thumb should be that you should not use the culturally or religiously significant symbols and clothes of any group of people alive in the world today, that you are not a part of, for a costume or fashion statement. For example, it is not offensive to dress up at an Ancient Roman for Halloween because they are all long dead but if Gucci’s summer line was covered in Stars of David or I saw someone dressed up as a Jew at a costume party I’d sure as hell have a problem with that.

I think it was really misleading of the author to call the diet in this article “kosher”, at best it might be some kind of “kosher-style”. Kashrut (noun form of kosher) is clearly defined in Halacha (Jewish law), yes there are slight differences between different Jewish communities from different countries but all of them agree that if you are eating in a restaurant that can serve you a cheeseburger, YOU ARE NOT KEEPING KOSHER. I think it’s great that not-so-observant Jews try to be mindful of kosher restrictions even if they aren’t really keeping kosher but don’t tell me it’s just another kind of keeping kosher, because it’s NOT.  I’m a 100% kosher keeping Jew and I think that a big part of the value of keeping kosher, other than being Torah law, is that it teaches us that the whole world is not there for us blindly consume, we have to think about and know what we are putting into our bodies and build self-control and restraint.

These ads were put out by the Israeli government to encourage Israelis who are living abroad to move back to Israel. There are nearly a million Israelis living abroad which is a big problem for a country of 7.8 million.  NO ONE in the Jewish world thinks that there is any issue with American, Israeli or any other type of Jews marrying each other. The issue that these ads are addressing is that in America, Jews are far more likely to assimilate and lose their Jewish identity than in Israel, the world’s only Jewish state. The fact that Jews in America are assimilating at a truly alarming rate is something the Jewish world should be able to talk about without American Jewish organizations getting so offended.
