A Toddler's Head Was Reattached To His Spine After A Horrible Car Crash

Jaxon Taylor's survival is being called a miracle.

An Australian toddler is making a miraculous recovery after undergoing surgery to reattach his head to his spine following an injury in a horrible car crash.

Jaxon Taylor was traveling on Sept. 15 with his mother, Rylea, and 9-year-old sister when they were struck head-on by another car.

The car was travelling at nearly 110kmh (70 mph), Rylea Taylor wrote online.

Rylea Taylor said the 18-year-old driver of the other car suffered no major injuries, but she instantly realized her children were gravely hurt, especially Jaxon.

“The second I pulled him out, I knew that his neck was broken," she told 7News.

The 16-month-old's head had detached from his spine in an injury known as an "internal decapitation."

The toddler was rushed to the BrizBrain & Spine Neurosurgery in Brisbane, where he was treated by Dr. Geoff Askin, who is known as Australia's "godfather of spinal surgery," according to 7News.

Askin told the station that even with all of his expertise, he had never seen an injury as bad as Jaxon's.

"A lot of children wouldn't survive that injury in the first place," he told the station. "And if they did and they were resuscitated, they may never move or breathe again."

But thanks to the work of Askin and his team, Jaxon is expected to make a full recovery.

The specialists reattached Jaxon's head to his vertebrae during a six-hour surgery by using a piece of wire, according to 7News.

Taylor has since started a petition calling on the Australian government to introduce harsher penalties on reckless drivers.

In the petition, Taylor describes the events that led up to the crash and what happened afterward.

"As my car came around the bend at around 100-110kms dust covered the road - the P platers [provisional license holder] had released their break and drove straight out onto the highway. For a split second I saw dust and then the force hit. The collision [was] so hard that all airbags were deployed. My nine-year-old daughter was unconscious, my 16 months old son was screaming - both were bleeding from their tiny faces. As I kicked open the crushed door I was faced with the three irresponsible boys - in school uniform who had just broken my family. As I pulled my son from the car I knew his neck was broken, as bystanders and my inlaws, who were traveling behind us, assisted getting my 9-year-old from the car, I tried to remain calm, I tried desperately to hold my children, I told them we were ok... Even though my heart told me otherwise, I tried not to cry, I tried to be strong because they needed me. All the while these boys sat next to their car suffering nothing."

"When contacted by police I was informed that the laws for reckless driving and causing grievous bodily harm carry different punishments from state to state, and that it is unlikely these boys will receive anything more than a suspended driving sentence and a fine."

The toddler will have to wear a halo brace for a while, but will lead a normal life.

"It is, it's a miracle," Rylea Taylor told 7News.
