French Elle Endorses Marriage Equality

The magazine weighs in France's marriage equality debate with the "Marriage For All" issue, which hits stands on Friday, January, 18th.

Just as President François Hollande's equality bill is about to go before parliament, the publication put out a loud endorsement of gay marriage. The debate has become extremely heated in the past month with vocal support on both sides of the issue.

"This debate is not primarily between old and modern, right and left, homophobes and progressives: there are gay, pro-marriage Catholics, left- and right-leaning psychologists fiercely attached to the symbolism of gender difference as a necessity for any potential child," wrote Elle editorial director Valérie Toranian. "There are feminists who advocate for IVF for lesbians, but who oppose surrogate mothers for gays because they denounce the commodification of women's bodies."
