2011 World Beard And Moustache Championships

The 2011 WBMC starts May 15 in Trondheim, Norway. The contestants are already bristling with excitement (just tickled, really) to compete in 14 different categories this year. With the help of Dave Mead's iconic 2009 WBMC pictures, let's look at the categories. I'd go myself but unfortunately they don't have a category for mediocre goatee that probably should have been shaved off ten years ago. [Note: spellchecker dislikes 'moustache' but it is the WBMC preferred spelling]

• 1. Natural Moustache

  

  Mustache may be styled but without aids. The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 1.5 cm beyond the end of the upper lip. No aids are allowed.

• 2. English Moustache

  

  Slender, beginning from the middle of the upper lip with the hairs extremely long and pulled to the side. Tips may be lifted slightly. The hairs are only allowed to start growing up to the end of the upper lip. Aids are allowed.

• 3. Dali Moustache

  

  Slender with long tips, straight up or arching up. The hairs are only allowed to start growing up to the end of the upper lip. Aids are allowed.

• 4. Imperial Moustache

  

  Small and bushy with tips arching up. The hairs are only allowed to start growing up to the end of the upper lip. Aids are allowed.

• 5. Hungarian Moustache

  

  Big and bushy, beginning from the middle of the upper lip and pulled to the side. The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 1.5 cm beyond the end of the upper lip. Aids are allowed.

• 6. Freestyle Moustache

  

  All moustaches that do not match other classes. The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 1.5 cm beyond the end of the upper lip. Aids are allowed. [From Marc Lester for Anchorage Daily News]

• 7. Natural Goatee

  

  Facial hair grown only on chin, upper and lower lip. Beard and moustache may be styled but without aids. Aids are not allowed. Moustache not required. [From Sheri Manson for TIME Magazine]

• 8. Fu Manchu

  

  Chin shaved with moustache allowed to start to grow up to a maximum of 2 cm beyond and below the end of the upper lip. Tips are long and pulled down. Aids are allowed. [From Sheri Manson for TIME Magazine]

• 9. Imperial Partial Beard

  

  Hair to be grown only on cheeks and upper lip. Moustache integrated. The ends must point upward and not be curled over. Aids are allowed.

• 10. Musketeer

  

  Moustache long and slender. Hairs are allowed to start growing from up to maximum of 1.5 cm beyond the end of the upper lip. Beard small and pointed. Aids are allowed.

• 11. Sideburns Freestyle

  

  All sideburns with shaved chin. Aids are allowed.

• 12. Garibaldi

  

  Broad, full and round. Length not to exceed 20 cm, moustache integrated. Aids are not allowed.

• 13. Full Beard National

  

  As grown, moustache integrated. No aids allowed.

• 14. Full Beard Freestyle

  

  Full beards not matching other classes. Aids are allowed. This is undoubtedly the crowd's favorite category where almost anything goes.
