It's Taken Over Two Years But Marine Le Pen Might Just Get Charged For Inciting Racism

In 2010, Le Pen compared Muslim prayers in the streets to the occupation of the Second World War. Earlier this week, the European Parliament lifted her immunity.

Earlier this week, the European Parliament overwhelmingly voted to lift Marine Le Pen immunity as a Member of the European Parliament.

In 2010, Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Front party in France, compared Muslims praying on the streets of France to an occupation.

"For those who want to talk a lot about World War Two, if it's about occupation, then we could also talk about it (Muslim prayers in the streets), because that is occupation of territory," she said.

Since Le Pen is an MEP, she has been immune from facing any prosecution but in December 2012, French authorities asked the European Parliament to lift her immunity, and a secret vote this week by a European Parliament committee was "overwhelming" in their decision to lift it, according to the BBC.

After receiving 18% in last year's presidential elections, the National Front has only appeared to grow stronger, with a recent survey by BFMTV stating that if the French elections were to take place again, both former president Sarkozy and Le Pen would have gone through to the second round.
