Petition Launched To Release Selena For MAC Makeup Line

A petition was launched yesterday to urge MAC Cosmetics to consider creating a line that both stands for Latina beauty and pays homage to slain Tejano superstar Selena.

“Selena Quintanilla is an iconic legend in our community and would she be alive, she'd be a perfect MAC girl!” the petition reads. It cites Selena’s still presents impact on young Latinas by linking to makeup tutorials like this one.

Selena swept at the 1987 Tejano Music Awards, winning "Best Female vocalist of the Year" and "Performer of the Year." Three years later, Ven Conmigo became the first Tejano album to reach gold status earning her the nicknames "Queen of Tejano" and "Mexican Madonna." (source)

She won a Grammy for Live in 1993 under the category “Best Mexican-American Album.”

The following year, her opus, Amor Prohibido was released.

Just a couple of hours after the petition was made live, it reached its goal of 5,000 signatures.

The same year Amor Prohibido was released, MAC teamed up with RuPaul for the first-ever Viva Glam campaign.

They have also launched products fronted by Lorde.

    Rihanna.

    And Barbie.

Along with Barbie, many Latina girls grew up playing with one of these:

"Selena was inspirational and helped to change my body image. I dare to be fashionable because she wore it all. Red lips, mascara, eyeliner are weapons," one of the signatures on the petition reads.

"Selena is a Mexican American beauty icon and this is long overdue!! Take my money already!" another signer urges.

The ball's in your court, MAC.
