There’s the body farm in Knoxville - even Stephen Fry has been.
OR if you do get to Gatlinburg - just drive a bit to the Sugarland nature center, pay $1 to take the trolley, and wait for the synchronized fireflies - it’s pretty breathtaking.

DO NOT go to the Smoky Mountain Moonshine distillery. It is an abomination to call clear whiskey moonshine. If you want the real stuff you have to make friends with the locals. But do stop at the Sun Sphere in Knoxville. Nothing would make me happier than to see you guys there.

While in Pigeon Forge to visit Dollywood, be sure to take some time to discover the 3-ring circus that is Cocke County, TN. Oh, and go to the moonshine place and get some apple pie moonshine. You can also stop in Greeneville, TN and see Andrew Johnson’s tailor shop. Also the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN (just N. of Knoxville) has annual anvil shoots. They put black powder in a hollow of a tree stump, set an anvil on top of it and light the fuse - thus blowing the anvil a couple of hundred feet into the air.

After Dollywood, drive over to Gatlinburg and go to Puckers on the main strip just to get a T-shirt that says, “I got Pucked Up at Puckers.” You can also pick up a cool air-brushed T to commemorate your adventure, and down some fried Oreos at many places on the strip.
