On Wednesday, July 24th at about 8:40pm, a train heading into the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela crashed.

Emergency workers attempted to find survivors in the wreckage, working through the night to locate passengers.

The train had over 200 passengers on board at the time. 80 were killed in the crash. The majority of the survivors were injured.

Sources say the issue was when the train reached a curve in the track going 180 kilometers per hour, or approximately 112 miles per hour.

The maximum speed on the curve was supposed to be 80 kilometers per hour, or about 50 miles per hour.

While it is unknown if it was a mechanical failure or the error of the driver, conductor Francisco José Garzón Amo is currently under investigation.

Santiago de Compostela, located in the Spanish region of Galicia, is currently in the middle of its annual festivities, though they have been cancelled due to the crash.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, a native of the region, as well as the King and Queen arrived in the city promptly after the crash occurred.
