    In the late 1950's the Eisenhower administration began development of a plan to shoot a nuclear bomb at the moon.

    • The U.S. Air Force theorized the detonation of an atom bomb on the Moon would result with a nuclear flash and a mushroom cloud that would be clearly visible from the Earth.

    • This full frontal retardation would be done in an effort to sway the public perception that the Soviets , who had just successfully launched Sputnik , were winning the space race .
