25 Things Hongkongers Visiting The UK Just Get

    Oh 7-Eleven, where art thou?

    1. Committing a huge faux pas in the cashpoint line by breathing down the neck of the person in front of you.

    2. Everyone laughing at your shivering in your multiple layers when the weather drops to a bone-chilling 15°C.

    3. Pigeon was just another delicious type of poultry… until you went to Trafalgar Square.

    4. On the way over, having to unpack your luggage at the airport, only to reveal mooncakes, dried lap cheung sausage, rice cookers, Pei Pa Koa, and underwear drying racks for your FOB relatives.

    5. And on the way back, maxing out your luggage allowance to bring back English chocolate, cheddar cheese, gossip magazines, and half of Boots' inventory for your BBC friends.

    6. Being called "Oriental".

    7. Using weird colonial English words that don’t actually exist in England.

    8. "Do you eat dogs?"

    9. "Do you know Kung Fu?"

    10. And the worst: "Do you speak Japanese?"

    11. Going to Wagamama and being the first to finish by about 20 minutes, as everyone else is struggling with their chopsticks.

    12. Everyone back home assuming your souvenir Harrods shopping bag is a fake.

    13. Trying to order in Cantonese at the Chinese take-away...

    14. And then, when you get your food, no one wants to share.

    15. Going to the supermarket to buy rice and not being able to find a packet bigger than 500 grams.

    16. Speaking of rice... paying £2.50 for a bowl of plain white rice in a Chinese restaurant?!

    17. The British obsession with cheesy music.

    18. English people wear their shoes in the house!

    19. Feeling up all the fruit in the supermarket.

    20. Walking around after 6pm (outside of London) and seeing absolutely NO ONE.

    21. Where are all the 7-Elevens?

    22. Trying to navigate the tube after being spoiled rotten by the MTR.

    23. When the chicken you ordered arrives at the table and your friend nearly throws up.

    24. Feeling seriously underwhelmed by November 5th fireworks displays.

    25. And Christmas decorations.

But it's OK, because whenever you get homesick there's always Chinatown.
