The Hero's Journey Of Explaining Your Favorite Sci-Fi Or Fantasy Show To Your Friend

Sometimes explaining the simplest thing in you favorite TV show can take forever. (Warning: minor spoilers for "Once Upon a Time," "Battlestar Galactica," and "The Vampire Diaries.")

Call To Action: Your friend asks you who the Cylons are.

...or maybe why Nina Dobrev plays so many characters on “The Vampire Diaries.”

…or why Emma and Snow are mother and daughter, but the same age on “Once Upon a Time.”

Refusal of the Call: Hm… I feel like this might take longer to explain then I’m ready for.

Supernatural Aid: But really, you wouldn't want to let the Salvatore brothers down.

    ...or disappoint Regina.

Crossing the Threshold: OK, let’s begin. So the Cylons attack. We learn early that they can take human form. There are twelve models. Tricia Helfer is a Cylon, so is Boomer, but she doesn't know it.

The Road of Trials: So Nina plays a doppelgänger. There are only three doppelgängers you need to worry about, but I guess technically there were a lot of them. But let’s not get into that yet. And their blood is strong and...

OK, so first things first Regina cast a spell on Fairytale Land. Snow and Charming put their only child, a daughter, in a magic tree. She was transported to the real world… No so yeah, on the show they do do a lot of flashbacks.

Man as Temptress: On man Lee Adama is so attractive... no wait, no we're getting off course.

Self-Doubt: I don’t even know if I know the answer at this point. I've been going about this all wrong... Wait, that's it!

The Ultimate Boon: OK here's what the titles say: "The Cylons were created by man. They rebelled. They evolved. They look and feel human. Some are programmed to think they are human. There are many copies. And they have a plan."

The doppelgängers all come from Amara and Silas. They were the original immortals. The universe created doppelgängers so versions of the couple could die.

Emma and Snow are the same age, well basically, because Emma broke the curse at the age of 28 so then her mom could start aging again.

Reward/Elixir: You’ve taught your friend something new! She kind of gets it. You’re triumphant!

Refusal to return: Wait don’t you want to know more?! Like I have a whole lot to say about vervain and compulsion and when it does and doesn’t work.

And for real we should talk about Regina and how she’s the best… but also killed a bunch of people.

Then there’s the fact that they introduce a 13th Cylon that never goes anywhere.

Rescue From Without: But your friend doesn't care anymore, so she turns the conversation to something else. Like fashion. Or politics... Or music.

The Return/Master of Two World: And as the conversation moves on you realize you’ve learned a little something about yourself. You watch a lot of TV.
