Leave them alone. They don’t have to be obligatorily *thankful* if they don’t want to! And probably some people are “not” thankful enough for what they have, even though they say they “are”, if so, why do they have to buy more shit they don’t need on black friday. An incidental note on grammar - it’s now generally accepted that proper English syntax does allow for a preposition at the end of a sentence. So while ‘I have nothing for which to be thankful’ is fine, there’s not generally regarded as being anything much wrong with saying ‘I’ve nothing to be thankful for’. It’s the kind of ‘lapse’ you wouldn’t have got away with 50 years ago, but which has since evolved into an acceptable usage. Churchill famously criticised the archaic insistence upon the avoidance of prepositions at the end of sentences with the light-hearted phrase ‘this is the sort of English up with which I cannot put’…

It’s a Latin grammar rule, just like the one about split infinitives (sort of…it’s literally IMPOSSIBLE to have a split infinitive in Latin). Educated people wanted English to be as Latin-esque as possible so they tried to force Latin grammar rules onto it when there really wasn’t any reason to. Some teachers are sticklers about them still, but avoiding them can make things sound stilted or, at the very least, change the meaning somewhat. (There’s a difference between “To boldly go where no man has gone before” and “To go boldly where no man has gone before.”)

The fact that these people have Twitter accounts shows that they do at least have Internet access and enough time and freedom to tweet. That may not feel like a big deal to them, but to many people in the world it’s an unimaginable liberty. I don’t want to get all judgey, but they do come across as attention-seeking ingrates.
