A Game of Thrones-inspired 10ft wooden dragon took an international chainsaw carving competition by storm.
Simon O’Rourke became the first Briton to lift the English Open Chainsaw Carving Competition trophy four times with his TV and film-inspired masterpiece, which has a moving head and neck, stealing the show. Check out this short video of Simon test-flying the creature.
The Wrexham-based wood carver, who also won the competition in 2007, 2008 and 2009, wowed the judges with his creation, which bears a striking resemblance to Drogon, the largest of the three dragons in the hit US-series Game of Thrones.
Simon, who triumphed over 15 international competitors to secure the title, has also created a fire-breathing dragon, which keeps guard at Gyrn Castle, near Ruthin, North Wales.
He said: “I knew I wanted to carve a dragon at the English Open, but had to put a lot of thought and imagination in to make it impressive.
“Moving parts came to mind and following the success of How To Train Your Dragon and Game of Thrones, I also thought it would be awesome to sit on it.
“It was then about putting the idea into action and ensuring the head and neck moved freely and securely. I’m thrilled with the finished piece and it’s fantastic to have won the tournament for a fourth time.”
And Game of Thrones fans can sit on the dragon to watch series 6 in style - the prize-winning dragon is available to buy for £5,000.
It’s the latest masterpiece created by Simon who has also carved a life-size horse for the Bolesworth International, a Sulawesi macaque monkey for Chester Zoo and an eye-catching life-size Batman used by a Wrexham couple to secure tenants for their £350,000 apartment after a lack of enquiries.
