The Happy Cemetery - UNESCO Heritage In Europe

Cemeteries are sad places, but this cemetery in Northern Romania, is an intriguing attraction, just because it's Merry:)

The crucifixes are hand sculpted pieces of art, engraved with humorous messages.

The concept of this Merry Cemetery was created by Stan Ion Patras. There are about 600 such monuments and they are made of oak wood, colored with very vivid colors.

The point of the concept is that when people pass away, it's a moment of joy as they are going to heaven or a better place.

This is the actual tombstone of the creator of the Happy Cemetery in Romania.

Most of the writings on the tombstones are funny, always a brief summary of one's life and cause of death, and what's fascinating, they rhyme.
