A Photographer Is Taking Powerful Portraits Of Young Wounded Soldiers Home From War

David Jay shows what life is like for soldiers returning to their normal lives after being in a war zone.

Photographer David Jay has shot a wide range of people, from models in the fashion industry to breast cancer survivors.

But for his current project, Jay is focusing his lens on a group of people people often turn away from and ignore: young, wounded soldiers home from war.

After returning home from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, severely wounded soldiers are captured in large-scale black-and-white portrait photographs for Jay's project The Unknown Soldier.

He began the photography project last year, and continues to travel to hospitals and homes around America to snap the veterans. His photographs are now part of a touring exhibition.

Jay's photographs capture the post-combat men and women in snaps that show vulnerability and courage; in his powerful photographs, he does not shy away from showing amputated body parts, scars, or burns.

Speaking about his project, Jay said: "I am amazed and humbled at every encounter I have had with these men. It is so important that they are given a platform in which to share their story and continue to receive the honour and recognition they deserve."
