Earlier NSW Premier Mike Baird told everyone to leave work early.

The weather is forecast to worsen tonight so the SES is encouraging people to head home early while it's still daylight. Stay safe everyone.

"Head home as soon as you possibly can," he said.

"That's really from the Illawarra to Newcastle, that is specific advice to Newcastle in particular," he said. "If I can ask for bosses to be flexible, for people to make arrangements in an orderly way to start to head home as soon as you possibly can."

The wild surf and intense winds mean the shoreline has all-but-disappeared in places.

In other places the beach and the city have become one.
