Bali Nine Ringleaders Make Their Last Requests

Condemned men made "simple, mature, and not materialistic" final wishes.

Bali Nine ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran have made their final requests before their likely execution just after the stroke of midnight on Wednesday.

The two men have both refused to sign the execution warrants prepared by Indonesian prosecutors, declaring that they had been rehabilitated and that their deaths would be unjust, News Corp reports.

Authorities then prepared a second document, outlining the men's reasons for refusing to sign the death warrant. The men then made their final requests.

Myuran Sukumaran's brother Chinthu told reporters his brother's final wish was to be allowed to continue painting for as long as possible before his death.

Chinthu Sukumaran said Andrew Chan's final wish was to be allowed to attend a church service with his family.

He also made a final plea for clemency to Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Fairfax reports.

"It still doesn't have to be this way," he said. "I would ask the president to please, please show mercy. There are nine people with families who love them – mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters. We ask the president to please intervene and save their lives."

The condemned men's families have been in regular contact with them.

The men's lawyer, Melbourne barrister Julian McMahon, left Indonesia's Nusukamban Island yesterday with self-portraits painted by Myuran Sukumaran. One of the paintings shows the prisoner with a dripping, black hole over his heart.

All avenues for appeal have now been exhausted, but Prime Minister Tony Abbott is still pleading for the men's lives to be spared.

"We abhor the death penalty, we oppose it at home we oppose it abroad and I want to reassure Australians that even at this late hour we are continuing to make the strongest possible representations to the Indonesian government that this is not in the best interests of Indonesia let alone in the best interests of the young Australians concerned," the PM said from Turkey.

Even as Mr Abbott made his plea, coffins were being prepared by undertakers on Nusukamban Island. Nine coffins (seen above) were constructed for the nine people who will be killed on the island some time this week. Along with the two Australians, there are seven others from nations around the world facing death.

Chan and Sukumaran are on death row for their role as ringleaders of a drug syndicate which attempted to smuggle 8.3kg of heroin into Australia in 2005.

The pair were sentenced to death in 2006, while their seven co-conspirators were all sentenced to life in prison.
