Adrian Bayley Will Likely Die In Prison

Jill Meagher's killer was today sentenced over three rape cases.

Adrian Bayley, the man who brutally raped and murdered ABC worker Jill Meagher, will likely die in jail.

Bayley, 43, was today sentenced to 18 years in jail for the sadistic rape of three women. That sentence is on top of the 35-year sentence he is already serving for the 2012 rape and murder of Meagher.

Today's 18-year sentence will be served on top of the 35-year sentence, meaning Bayley won't be eligible for parole until 2058, when he is 86.

Judge Sue Pullen said Bayley had "hunted" his three victims, who were "easy prey."

Bayley was found guilty earlier this year of raping two sex workers and a Dutch backpacker. The three attacks occurred over a period of 12 years, and one was carried out just two months before Bayley attacked and killed Meagher, 29, in a Melbourne laneway.

"The very magnitude of your crimes demands a sentence of some substance,'' Judge Pullen said.

"I am also conscious that the sentence I have imposed will most likely ensure you have likely forfeited your hope or expectation of eventual release from prison.''

Meagher's disappearance gained national headlines in 2012 when she never made it home following a night out with friends.

Meagher's body was found buried in a ditch six days later, a day after Bayley had been arrested.

Bayley pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to a 35-year non-parole period. It was only the guilty plea that prevented a life sentence, when Justice Geoffrey Nettle said the plea showed a hint of remorse from Bayley.
