This Giant Squid Has Washed Up On A Beach In New Zealand And It Looks Utterly Terrifying

A giant squid, over two metres long, has reportedly washed up on a beach in New Zealand.

The Kaikoura Marine Centre and Aquarium uploaded pictures of the specimen to Facebook on Thursday.

This chap, Jay Lewis, is apparently 1.83 metres tall.

The squid is said to have been found by local resident Bruce Bennett while he was walking his dog at South Bay in Kaikoura.

Bennett said he thought the squid washed up on the beach on Tuesday night, the Marlborough Express reported.

"I wish it had been a lump of [whale] ambergris,” he said. "I've found old fishing floats and bits and pieces of other stuff, never any ambergris."

The squid, which reportedly has tentacles five metres long, was moved to the aquarium where it was frozen, the Facebook post said.

Some samples have now been sent to Auckland and Otago Universities for further research.
