Determined to finish the race, however, the 29-year-old crawled over the finish line on her hands and knees, eventually finishing third.

Ngetich refused the wheelchair and help offered by race volunteers as she dragged her body to the end of the race.

At one point she stopped, totally exhausted, just metres from the finish, but she found the strength to carry on.

After the race, the event's director, John Conley, told Ngetich: "You ran the bravest race and crawled the bravest crawl I have ever seen in my life."

Ngetich told CBS affiliate KEYE-TV: "For the last two kilometres, I don’t remember. Finish line, I don’t remember."
