Why don't we get a few other countries to go along with us and call off a war or three, and pool all the money saved for a massive dual-goal Manhattan Project for Domesticated Companion Animals? Goal 1: Insure that the goal of the Michelson Prize is realized in a practical, scalable way within ten years. The Michelson Prize is like an X-Prize for the benefit of pets; it offers money and research infrastructure, and promises an award of $25 million for the invention of a successful non-surgical method of sterilizing dogs and cats. If such a method were to become inexpensive and widely available, the benefits would be absolutely huge: Within a generation, we could end the needless suffering and death of hundreds of millions of lonely, sick, feral, potentially aggressive cats and dogs. (I don't know about any of you, but it would absolutely kick major ass if I could make it out of a pet supply store without needing to brush away the tears that always come when I have to pass cage displays filled with lonely and abandoned pets who need a human to love, and to feed and love them in return.) Goal 2: Intensive research into healthcare that could extend both the time and the quality of pets' lives. Because with a near-solution to the seemingly endless problem of strays, there will be much less need to find homes for unwanted animals. And because the only thing that absolutely, positively SUCKS about sharing your life with a cat or a dog is that it is almost certain that you'll have to deal with the death of your friend at some point. It's not fair to us, and it's certainly not fair to the dogs and cats—who are arguably far more noble, loving, and pure of intent than all but a tiny minority of very special and rare human beings. Certainly the welfare of creatures so dependent on us and so beneficial to us, is worth giving up a couple of stupid wars for, right? Or even just, say, a couple of bombers and a few high-tech warheads, at least?
