L K Pruitt 2 years agoI’ve always thought Mandarin ducks were among the most exquisite birds on Earth (followed by some species of the Birds of Paradise from New Guinea) after first seeing them on a “Nature” series called “Realms of the Russian Bear” - the birds there live in the Kamchatka region of Siberia which is very near to Japan, ostensibly the place from which these stunning birds originally migrated. While it is most unfortunate that less than 1,000 pairs exist in Russia and China, Japan claims to have 5,000 pairs, and captive pairs have escaped and are breeding freely in both England and Sonoma County, CA, albeit they cannot be listed as endangered in either the US or the UK because they are not a native species. Anyway, I find the uniquely shaped wing plumage combined with their strikingly vivid coloration remarkable, perfection in both form and visual appeal. Thanks for posting these photos Rebecca and providing the link to Wikipedia - my son sent me your link knowing how I feel about these fabulous birds and I joined BuzzFeed in order to rate the photos and write this review.
