Politics Buzz The Florida legislature has approved the sale of a Jesus Christ vanity license plate. When asked about the apparent lack of separation of church and state, Gov. Charlie Crist said, 'If they don’t want one they don’t have to buy one.'

Actually no other religious group has to do anything but ask for one. If they pass this plate, they automatically approve a plate for any other religion or they face a massive lawsuit they will lose and pay a settlement or award and then still do the plate. This includes Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Wiccans and Atheists. Just like the military has to do for tombstones, for the same reason. It's all or none. Why is nobody in this bloody state familiar with the Law of Unintended Consequences?
Let them spend their money on that instead of sending it to anti-gay groups!
It's about a large group of people having an outlet to express their opinion… is this seriously the most important cause you have to fight? Who cares? Let them have a damn license plate design. There's about 5 million groups in Florida that have their own design. Don't give me this argument about making a plate for every other religion just to be 'fair'. As if they made a “I Hate Bikes” plate to even out the 'Share the Road' plates. Pffftttt… If another group (religious or otherwise) wants a plate, ask for one, push for one and get one. This country is about allowing people freedoms to express themselves, not limiting them because you're the bigot who can't tolerate others' beliefs.
I'm looking forward to my own religious license plate. You'll approve that too, right, Gov. Crist?
On the bright side, maybe having a gruesome picture of a limp corpse on the license plate will remind people to drive safer…
Okay, I still can't get over this. It's not even a happy Jesus! Or Jesus feeding a multitude of peeps! It's sad, naked, dead Jesus.
I guess the jesus fish just isn't enough for some people. And I don't recall Jesus having a car when he helped George Washington find America with the Niña, Pinta, or Santa Maria.
Jesus saves, moses invests. So so sad is this.
I can't think of a worse visual to put between the words Florida and Sunshine State than a crucified man.
This should be called the “Jesus DeMilo” license plate…
It has nothing to do with whether or not the plate is “trashy”. Unless the Florida DMV is preparing to offer a vanity plate for every possible religion including Atheism this will be seen as an explicit endorsement of A religion which is in direct violation of the Establishment Clause. Expect this to disappear very quickly.
? What's wrong with this exactly? Sure it's trashy, but vanity plates aren't that much better as a rule… Put me down as agreeing with the governor on this one. And I'm an atheist.
I can't wait to see the joke vanity plates.
I'm torn. I'm all for separation of church and state, but considering the context, this is still less offensive to my good taste than every other vanity license plate I've ever seen.
kavi thinks Florida's New Jesus Christ License Plate is a sin-sation.
