20 Amazing YouTube Cover Collabs You Need To Hear Right Now

Hello, people of the internet. We'll be distributing Gooties Cooties.

    20. Thrift Shop, covered by Lindsey Stirling and Tyler Ward

One of the things I admire most about Lindsey Stirling’s cover videos is that the locations are always spot-on, as is the case in this video where she and Tyler Ward take on an actual thrift shop. The cover retains the sense of fun and recklessness contained in the original, while at the same time changes some of the lyrics in order to make sure that the song is clean enough for PG audiences (which is an achievement in itself). Also, who knew that rap and violin could sound so amazing together?

    19. Can't Hold Us, covered by Tyler Ward and Alex G

    Via youtube.com

From one Macklemore & Ryan Lewis hit to the next, Tyler Ward does seem to possess a knack for producing innovative covers of their brilliant rap songs. Let’s not forget that this video introduced the supremely talented Alex G to the YouTube universe, which is one of the best things to happen to the world of covers since a certain Schneider decided to start a YouTube account (but more on that later). Also, the video, which is filled with their cute choreography fails and lots of face touching is too adorable to handle. #tylexforever

    18. Skyrim, covered by Lindsey Stirling and Peter Hollens

Peter Hollens and Lindsey Stirling redefine epic with this cover of the Skyrim Main Theme using only sounds produced from the mouth and the violin. 114 tracks of Peter’s voice are combined with the violin to produce this truly magnificent symphony. The video in itself is a magical sight to behold, with visual effects and elements from the video game in addition to the breathtaking locations and costumes.

    17. Begin Again, covered by Megan Nicole, Alex Goot and The Piano Guys

    Via youtube.com

There’s nothing much to say about this one, apart from a remark on how perfect Megan Nicole’s voice is for covering Taylor Swift’s songs (not that her other covers are any less amazing). Begin Again is one of those songs that just seems to beg for a cover by The Piano Guys, who have done a beautiful solo cover of the song as well. Add Goot and Nicole to the equation and you produce something that has you hitting replay over and over again.

    16. Photograph, covered by Alex Goot and Against The Current

If there's any YouTube band out there that can cover Nickelback (and cover it well), it's definitely Against The Current. Goot and ATC have somehow managed to cover this rock classic in a way that not only deserves to be appreciated in its own right but makes one love the original even more. While Chad Kroeger's singing style is one-of-a-kind and totally rad, he does make it hard to understand the lyrics. Chrissy Costanza's vocals somehow manage to convert the song into a delightfully 2014 pop-rock single and let's be real, she basically steals the show with this one.

    15. Mirrors, covered by Boyce Avenue and Fifth Harmony

First things first, no one loves Justin Timberlake's original version more than I do and I was extremely biased against this cover (quite senselessly) for a really long time before I began to appreciate it. I must admit however that Fifth Harmony does bring an interesting, albeit unconventional, tone to the song that kind of sticks with you long after you hear it in the same way that the original does. Boyce Avenue, is excellent as ever and a shout out to Fabian for the brilliant work on the electric guitar. Also, can we see hand claps in more covers please? Thanks!

    14. Radioactive, covered by Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix

Pentatonix doesn't really collaborate a lot with other YouTubers, and tbh they don't really need to considering how awesome they are all by themselves. I'm so glad they decided to cover this one with Lindsey Stirling though. The violin, the beatboxing and the post-apocalyptic (almost radioactive?) setting together add up to a glorious rendition of the Imagine Dragons original. Let's just say, I would pay my weight in gold to watch a live performance of this.

    13. Disney Medley, covered by Alex G and Peter Hollens

Anyone who claims to be a fan of Alex G's has got to know about her love affair with Disney, and this cover is kind of a celebration of their mutual appreciation. Not only did Disney help produce this video, but also used the medley (which covered some of Disney's most revered classic songs) to announce the launch of the Disney Classics Box Set. And as is the case with anything that Disney decides to get involved in, the video is pure perfection from start to finish. Shot in various locations in and around Oregon over three days, the medley is a welcome trip down memory lane revisting moments we've cherished for what seems like forever. Definite highlights were the Zulu portion of Circle Of Life and Peter Hollens's Sebastian impression in Under The Sea. How do you lip-sync underwater anyway? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    12. Mission Impossible, covered by The Piano Guys and Lindsey Stirling

Lindsey Stirling + The Piano Guys + Mission Impossible is just the definition of musical heaven. In this cover, Lindsey and the Piano Guys take on one of the most iconic movie themes of all time and give it an epic spin, while creating a video that is as awesome as any of the movies in the franchise. From the sound effects to the plotline to the actual music itself, the entire video is just YouTube gold, and is such a perfect tribute to the MI franchise and all it stands for. 'Nuff said.

    11. Cups, covered by Kurt Schneider, Sam Tsui, Alex G and Kina Grannis

    View this video on YouTube

    Via youtube.com

The Cups sequence is hard to master in itself, and this cover takes it to a whole new level by making the four artists exchange their cups after every sequence. I love how they decided to use both glass and plastic tumblers, and how the entire video was shot in a single take. The sequence in the middle where Kurt and Sam throw the cups around for a bit and make it sound musical and in sync was totally awesome. I don't know how they all managed to harmonize and coordinate the cups at the same time, but they did, and a great job they did indeed.

    10. Just A Dream, covered by Kurt Schneider, Sam Tsui and Christina Grimmie

    Via youtube.com

This cover is special to me, and quite possibly to YouTube as well, for a number of reasons. It wouldn't be unreasonable to claim that Kurt Schneider kind of established the cover collab with this video, and it is also arguably one of the most (if not the most) popular YouTube covers of all time, having now garnered more than a 100 million views. It was also the first cover I heard of any song ever, and it definitely blew my mind. There's a certain beauty in the simplicity of the video and it serves as a throwback to a past when YouTube covers weren't that common and these things took quite long to record and produce. Also, Christina Grimmie was only 16 when she sang this. Take a bow, Grimmie. No, take several.

    9. Clarity, covered by Kurt Schneider and Sam Tsui

Covers of EDM songs usually end up being bad ideas, unless of course Sam Tsui is the one covering them. His vocals are a pleasure to listen to in any scenario and he especially shines in covers of songs such as this one, as he seems to hit all the high notes with such ease. Not only does this version introduce an extra layer of depth into the lyrics, but Kurt's brilliant piano playing makes the song all the more emotional and even painful in a way. Also, this collaboration is a tried and tested one, and it has only gotten better with the years. Here's to many more years of beautiful covers from these two.

    8. Counting Stars, covered by Alex Goot, Kurt Schneider and Chrissy Costanza

    View this video on YouTube

    Via youtube.com

The combination of Kurt, Chrissy and Alex is probably the most explosive thing to ever happen in the world of cover collabs. We've already seen how well Alex and Chrissy's voices sound together in the numerous covers Goot has done with Against The Curent, and now we get to hear them in conjunction with the musical genius of Kurt Schneider. There really isn't anything much to say apart from how perfect everything is. It's amazing enough to pass off as an original song, and it's one of the best covers I've ever heard.

    7. A Thousand Miles, covered by Boyce Avenue and Alex Goot

    View this video on YouTube

    Via youtube.com

I didn't realize how badly I had been waiting for a good male cover of A Thousand Miles until it actually happened. Goot's piano skills have never been better than they are in this cover and Alejandro's vocals suit nostalgic songs like this one very well. Also, Alex Goot and Boyce Avenue are arguably two of the most talented cover artists to have ever existed in YouTube's short history, and any collaboration of theirs is bound to be nothing short of epic.

    6. Diamonds, covered by Alex Goot, Julia Sheer and Chad Sugg

    View this video on YouTube

    Via youtube.com

All three of these artists have such amazing recording voices, voices that are perfect for the studio. While the original song by Rihanna has a certain raw appeal to it, this cover possesses an ethereal dream-like vibe that seems to go very well with the lyrics and the tune of the song. Julia Sheer is the most effortless singer I have ever had the pleasure of hearing and her singing chops are so incredible that it almost seems rude to be so talented. Also, Chad Sugg completely nails this one with his pronunciation of 'ecstasy'. Keep shining bright, guys.

    5. Safe And Sound, covered by Megan Nicole and Tiffany Alvord

    Via youtube.com

For those who don't know that the original by Taylor Swift is a part of The Hunger Games soundtrack, let me give you the 411 on why this cover is so apt and perfect. The song is intended to be a lullaby that Katniss Everdeen croons to her younger sister Primrose, as the bleak and desolate world they've always known begins to crumble around them. Voila and you have two of the most vocally talented female YouTube artists taking on the roles of Katniss and Prim and producing this heart-wrenching melody (which according to my iTunes I have played over 125 times).

    4. One More Night, covered by Alex Goot, Chrissy Costanza, Julia Sheer, Luke Conard, Chad Sugg, Ingrid Nilsen and Corey Gray

So this is Alex Goot's sixth appearance on this list and I haven't really said much about him because I've been saving it all for this one. This cover is where we finally catch a glimpse of the solo cover one-man-band Alex Goot, and as usual he does not fail to impress. I counted four instruments just in the course of this video while I wasn't being distracted by all the epic piano-bashing that was happening. Also, it would be fair to say that this collaboration is the biggest YouTube cover collab of all time just in terms of the shear number of artists involved, unless you count Kurt Schneider's very recently released cover of Bohemian Rhapsody.

    3. The One That Got Away, covered by Tiffany Alvord and Chester See

    View this video on YouTube

    Via youtube.com

The best duet cover I've ever heard. Period. If voices could be married to one another, Tiffany's and Chester's voices belong in the realm of holy matrimony. Somehow, all the angst and pain that the song talks about are magnified in the cover thanks to their incredible voices. I absolutely loved the matching tattoos and the simple white and grey background; a sort of unintentional homage to the original, if you will. This is one cover that you just can't let get away. BRB, need to listen to Chester say 'in another life' again.

    2. Maroon 5 Medley, covered by Kurt Schneider, Victoria Justice and Max Schneider

This video does so many epic things I don't even know where to begin. Not only is it a cover and a collab, it's also a medley and a lyric video all rolled into one. Also, it's one of the first one-take cover videos that Kurt Schneider has now become so famous for doing. I can't even imagine how hard it must have been to shoot the entire thing without any mistakes. Luckily, I don't have to because it's perfect from start to finish. Kudos to the brilliant KHS for arranging some of the songs of my favorite band into quite possibly the best medley I had heard in a really long time.

    1. Beauty And A Beat, covered by Kurt Schneider, Alex Goot and Chrissy Costanza

A good cover (according to Taylor Swift, btw), is one where the artist has made the original song their own, changing the way the song makes you feel, as have most of the covers on this list. An excellent cover, however, according to me this time, is one that betters the original to an extent that it is beyond recognition. And that is exactly what this song does. Don't get me wrong - I'm not one of those Bieber haters the internet seems to be filled with these days, but I must admit that the original while catchy is quite unremarkable and a typical product of today's party-themed pop-centric music industry. This cover does not only provide soul to a song that didn't have one in the first place, but also ensures that it doesn't lose the feel-good fun factor that Beauty and A Beat is all about. I don't have a specific reason for placing this one at the top of my list, but I'm yet to encounter someone who isn't blown away by this cover. Peace out!
