Superbugs And Farm Animals - FDA's Toothless Antibiotics Policy
For the first time in almost 40 years the FDA finally took a stand regarding the use of antibiotics in farm animals by issuing a voluntary guidance to limit the use of antibiotics that are considered medically important to people. The problem is the recommendations will do little to limit the amount of non-medically important antibiotics farmers use and will most likely do little to reduce the risk of the development of resistant bacteria. Without requiring farmers to raise their animals in healthier, less crowded conditions - limiting their need for antibiotics- the risk of developing more superbugs on animal farms will remain.
