Next time I go out to eat I am tipping the waitress negative ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

Guys, just to clarify… When you give the server your card and they return with the receipt for you to put in a tip the transaction has already happened. If you live a tip they will add it in later. There is no way to input a negative number for the tip. However a discount can, at this time, be applied. What the person in this picture has effectively done is to present a homemade “100% off” coupon. No business is going to honor a coupon you made yourself and as this is no different, the transaction will simply be processed with no tip included. As they didn't actually try to pass a fake coupon, no law has been broken. If they're sufficiently douchey, they can contact their credit card company and dispute the charge, but there's almost certainty that in this instance the vendor will get paid. It's shitty, nasty, and catty, but at the end of the day it's no different than leaving a nasty note instead of a tip, nothing more.

whether or not someone will leave a tip is a good indicator of their character. personally, if someone doesn't leave a tip i won't be dining out with them twice.

Aaand still they gave them their credit card information so they can track them down. Who input this into the computer? Did they run after they picked up the check?

If you really have that much of a problem with the service, you pay your bill and go to the manager. If it is a chain write a letter/email. I was given poor service at a high-end restaurant once and complained to the idiot manager who did nothing. I took it to their corporate president and ended up with a $150 certificate for another meal.  You have to know how and when to complain. If the place is jammed pack and the service is slow, that should be expected. If it is slow and the staff is just lacadasical that's something different.

I don't think that's legal. I'm rather certain he at least has to pay for the meal. I'd also like to see him “pay” for his rudeness.

Sometimes, people who get no tip deserve no tip. I tip 20% for average service, maybe 15% for not that great service, and will tip a nickel on those rare occasions when the entire dining experience was a clusterfuck from start to finish. There's no way to tell from that receipt if the server was a total fuckup or not.

Yeah…that's definitely illegal. And supremely douchey. I spent eight years working in restaurants to put myself through school…hence why I START my tipping at 20% and work my way DOWN.

Anyone who chooses to becomes a waitress deserves to have their tips taxed.

I think it should be required for everyone to work in the service industry at some point in their life. People that make income from tips, don't have to get paid minimum wage. I barely made $2/hour when I was a waitress. That didn't amount to a whole lot once taxes were taken out, so I pretty much relied solely on tips.

A lot of stuff people don't tip servers for are things out of the server's control (time it took to be seated, time for the food to be prepped, cook getting order messed up, etc.) I understand that, on occasion, you’ll get the terrible server, but I think a lot of the time people are too cheap to leave a decent tip, so they make excuses.

I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bullshit I got two words for that: learn to fuckin' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fuckin' surprise.

I tip and tip well. but if the service sucks I tip very low and give an explanation on the back as to why. Someone will read it. They may not care but they will at least know why they aren't getting extra. I also make sure to add “I know it's not the bus boys fault so and so was such a bitch. Please make sure he gets this.”

They are getting SO MUCH semen in their food/drinks next time.  ANIMAL semen.

To yvan and other people who don't get how rude this was, servers AND bartenders relay completely on tips as their income. I make 4 dollars an hour as a bartender (less as a server) and due to taxes I get zero dollars on my paychecks. It's one thing to not tip. But to think you don't even have to pay the bill is just selfish idiotic crap.
