Mitt Romney’s effort to look less rich took a weird turn yesterday in New Hampshire where he told a rapt audience about his time a cash-strapped Mormon missionary in France.

cucany a year agoAnyone who has lived in France will recognize that Mitt isn’t talking about pooping in a bucket. He’s describing the squat toilets (toilettes à la turque) that can still be found in older low-rent apartment houses. No sitting down — you squat over the toilet. When you’re done, pull a chain and water flows out of a tank, washing everything down the drain. There are two raised pads to stand on so you don’t splash yourself. If there’s a bucket, it’s for rinsing anything that didn’t get washed down by the water from the tank. If you’re not used to these toilets, you won’t know to walk back a few steps before you pull the chain, and your shoes will get a good rinsing too.
