New York City Subway In 1986

Filmed in 1986, showing what the New York City subway looked before it was all cleaned up. Iit would be awesome if subways would let artists paint/graffiti on the wagons. It would give them so much more life.

  • The subway cars are a thousand times cleaner, but the stations themselves are still as grimy as ever. When I ride the metro in another country and came back to the US I couldn't believe that we have it so bad in terms of upkeeping, timely repairs, and cleanliness.

  • In 1986 not all trains had air conditioning, just take a minute to imagine that in the middle of July during rush hour.

  • I'm there on a regular basis, and holy shit…
Some of the subway station looks almost exactly the same (the newsstand and upper level) and some parts look as if my younger sister got to it with a Sharpie (the subway cars themselves). Now? The newer subway cars are very clean, although nowhere near perfect. Some of the same (obviously not sure if the exact same, but very well could be) subway cars are still used and have only had the graffiti removed. It's awesome and a bit creepy looking at this station I see often in the present day how it looked the year I was born.
