The Flash Diet

Food Buzz A study has shown that slimmers who take photographs of their meals stick more carefully to their diet than others. I guess it makes sense that staring at a photo of the five-piece Popeyes meal you had for lunch might guilt you into eating better the next day.

  • There’s no way a picture of Popeye’s is going to make me feel guilty. I only feel bad when I take photos of green beans and brown rice.

  • I’ve been photographing my meals since June 2007 and blogging it at Journal of a Photo-dieter. I’ve certainly lost weight doing this - and I can see if I’ve had my five-a-day. The first week was a revelation - I really had no idea I ate that often or that my portions were that big. When the plate is in front of you and you are hungry it doesn’t seem like loads but when you look at a day’s food it can be a shock. I find it particularly useful, when I have put on a few pounds, to go back and look at what I ate during the weeks I lost weight. That reminds me of what works for me People soon get used to you taking photos of your food and you needn’t be overly obvious about it. Some people use the camera in their mobile phone. Although I sometimes photograph my packed lunch before I take it to work I find that photographing just before I eat it reminds me that I’m about to put food in my mouth can stop the mindless eating that can lead to extra pounds.

  • i was twittering everything i ate for about 2 weeks and boy o boy did i stop reaching for those 5 reeses mini cups out of the office candy jar when i had to then turn around and let the whole world know i was a fat ass. i was also taking pictures of meals i ate when i went out to restaurants not only because they were pretty but also because when you look at those photos the next day, your dinner plate seriously resembles a feeding trough. gross.
