Mario Balotelli Arrives At Liverpool
But will the self-proclaimed Camo King finally fit in at Anfield Road?
Liverpool’s Barbershops and a handful of Game & Tackle providers rejoiced yesterday morning at the surfacing of pictures of the mohican-bearing, camouflage-obsessed Mario Balotelli training for the first time on the rain-sodden Melwood soil.
Amid impending speculation, but before any official announcement had taken place, the Daily Mail released a few photographs suggesting his rather unforeseen arrival at Liverpool FC for a mere £16m, presumably with the hopes of at least partially replacing their previously prolific, currently cannibalistic striker Luis Suarez. Suarez, who departed for the irritatingly good Catalan midgets of Barcelona earlier this summer has likely set his sights on a new beginning after World Cup disgrace, as well as new silverware – which will hopefully inspire self-reflection as well as self-improvement. Balotelli is similarly no stranger to the media’s sharp eye, though reporters needn’t step too close for fear of losing that eye via firework detonation. Unlike Suarez, despite his erratic behavior, Balotelli has always managed to maintain an inexplicable charm and cool, a fascinating vulnerability beneath his madness that we all wish desperately to expose.
He is older and perhaps more tame than he was during his Manchester city days, now settled and engaged to Belgian model Fanny Neguesha. But do we supporters want to witness a tame Balotelli? Controlled, yes, but perhaps the pale blue strip of Liverpool’s Manchester rivals was all too anemic for the fiery sprit of Balotelli. Perhaps red is a more appropriate vehicle for his consummate lunacy. Let’s hope so.
