This is Drake University
Drake is a small Liberal Arts College in Des Moines, Iowa
In September 2014, Drake received 2 out of 5 stars from the Campus Climate Index
In an effort to increase awareness around LGBT issues and our campus score, students created a "Closeted Issues Week"
As part of this Closeted Issues week, 6 doors, each painted one color of the rainbow flag, were placed around campus.
A few years ago, these doors were placed on campus by Rainbow Union on national coming out day. Overnight they were vandalized
These doors have been stirring up conversation all over campus, especially on Yik Yak
It started like this
After a few hours, some students already wanted the doors taken down
On the first night, the doors were knocked over
Religion was brought in to the conversation
Some people were really upset, in a good way
Some Yaks got pretty hateful
Some provided us with insight
Marriage was brought up
Apparently issues affecting minorities don't "deserve" special attention
Oh.... so Human rights are ALWAYS about being treated inhumanely... Hate crimes ONLY involve being "beaten"?
One was pretty funny too
So excited to see people out themselves! The orgy though?
Started to see a lot more support now too :)
Below is a door that students have signed to show support for LGBT issues at Drake. One Voice is thankful for all the support. They hope to continue to see students & administration actively work towards making Drake a more inclusive environment for all.
