    7 Least Expected Animal Cousins

These would make for some very awkward family photos

    1. Okay, platypuses are pretty weird. I mean, this chart pretty much sums it up on their place in the animal kingdom...

Nope! Platypus's closest cousin is the echidna, like Sonic the Hedgehog's frenemy Knuckles

    2. The coelacanth (see-la-kanth) looks like a mix of sharks, tuna, flounder, and children's tears.

But it's actually closer to humans! As well as other mammals, reptiles, and birds than it is to bony fish.

    3. The fuzzy little hyrax probably spends his days frolicking with his cuz the bunny rabbit and little bro the chipmunk.

.... or maybe some hide and seek with his true closest cousin, the Elephant

    4. Despite its attempts to pass for a poorly taxidermed gopher, this is the mountain beaver, which kind of makes sense if you imagine a tailless beaver that you hit in the face a few times.

Nope! The mountain beaver is part of the squirrel family. There's always that one cousin that just did not turn out okay.

    5. Ok, sloths. Equal parts bear cub, monkey, and tree moss?

Turn that moss to metal (ok, keratin), and you get the sloth's closest relation, the armadillo.

    6. Speaking of, here's a clear armadillo companion, the Pangolin. They have scales, they even roll up in a little ball. Not much to get confused here...

except he's actually closer to cats and dogs and their relatives than armadillos!

    7. Alright the Okapi definitely has a look of its own, but check out its backside. Without a doubt some zebra cousin.

Not even close! The next in line to the Okapi throne is the giraffe!
