Middle-Schoolers React To The Paris Attacks

"It makes me not want to go to public places"

When my 13 year old sister texted me a link to a Buzzfeed article detailing a Paris victim's experience inside the Bataclan theater, I was shocked.

I like to think of my sister as a little girl who is insulated from the horrors of the real world. But she's growing up, and growing up in a world where she has instant access to the world's news online, often beginning on Instagram and Twitter.

I interviewed a few eighth graders using the medium they are most comfortable with: text message. I removed names and each of their parents consented. Below are excerpts from our conversations.

When did you find out? What did you think?

    Are you scared?

What did people say at school?

But most kids who I talked to were hopeful.

"I know the world is full of terrible people, but there are also good parts right now all the bad ones are getting attention."
